Summer Surpises

So Bush is in the middle of a five week "working" vacation. Is there anything really surprising about that, knowing what we know about our "Relaxation" President. In 2001, he took a similar vacation. What has surprised me this summer is that the American public is not really that up in arms about the high gasoline prices. They're downright docile about it. Now, if we had a President Kerry in the Summer of 2005 and were experiencing the same high gas prices, you know the American public would call for his lynching - a la Jimmy Carter.

Most people do realize that any president doesn't have a lot of control over gas prices, but we like to have someone to blame. That's why I don't understand our blase attitude on this issue. Well, I for one am just glad I don't have a gas guzzler and in a perverse way, I'm kind of enjoying the escalating prices. Because maybe, when gas hits a certain price, the American public will demand American ingenuity come up with alternatives to gasoline. But I'm betting the public's first step will be to shed or simply not purchase these big gas guzzling SUVs.
